a5c7b9f00b A Duke's son leads desert warriors against the galactic emperor and his father's evil nemesis when they assassinate his father and free their desert world from the emperor's rule. The desert planet Arrakis - we enter the year 10191 and the whole universe depends on the spice Melange which exists only on this dry and desolate planet. The natives of this planet await the arrival of their Messiah who will lead them into a holy war against the evil Harkonnen empire. This is the film adaptation based on Frank Herbert's cult novel. Am I insane giving this film 10 out of 10? Perhaps, but then, what can I do about it. I don't know what could have been better. Perfect design and perfect music - perfect, perfect music - a film experience like taking a hallucinogenic drug!

I did get the story, but that's not to the point! The film is hypnotic, dwelling, for instance, upon the relevance of embodiment. It is the old "Man might be weak by nature compared with animals, but he can produce tools." Tools no good! Be not have! Be not have! it echoes all way through. At some point it gets you. Should you use medicine or breeding schemes?

Who knows? Who can tell? Like a wild gorilla joggling its cage Dune shines forth with ideas desperately striving to escape public conventions. Bureaucracythe rule of heart plug installers!

Indeed, Thomas Edward Lawrence, command and I follow! You, finest of all creatures who ever have set foot on earth! You want a mediaeval future? I give you the Landsraad, great houses, noble borns, even if a Duke didn't marry the mother of the - super being! You find yourself betrayed by Diplomats and exploited by unturkish elements of the Osman empire? And who was the actor, who dared to play that role in your biography? Nothing is forgotten! Let everyone be seenhe really is, in all his sadistic lust, born of his inferiority's envy! 'cause, no one compares, no one compares to you!

That had to be said too, didn't it? "The sword means two things: death and cleanliness." Hi, ho… "We will kill until no Harkonnen breathes Arrakean air!" But there's one thing that eluded Herbert's attention. Of the Wahibis Lawrence wrote that they'd be a "moslem heresy". So, perhaps the cleaning of Arrakis of foreigners to that extend might not have been exactly in Lawrence' sense, though we all know that today it is the political agenda of some.

You see? It is a treasure! I really love Dune. The reason I watched this film for the first time years ago was the fact that I had played Dune 2: The Building of a Dynasty. I had never read the book or even heard of it until I saw the film (and no, I still haven't read the book and probably never will, I don't like reading). Years after watching the film for the first time I also played the original Dune game, which was great, well.

Dune has a perfect set of actors; to mention some of my favorites: Kyle MacLachlan, Everett McGill (funny, they both were cast in another David Lynch masterpiece, Twin Peaks) and Jürgen Prochnow (I prefer him without a mustache & beard though, lol!). I can't help mentioning Stingwell, even though I prefer himan artist.

Another thing I loved about this film was the stunningly beautiful music. Especially I liked the piece that was played during the end credits.

The movie itself had a good plot (I must remind you I haven't read the book so I don't know whether the movie was anything even close to the book??). It was fun to watch, there were no boring moments. I was a bit confused in the beginning of the film though, the Emperor had a strange guest, I can't remember what the thing was called or what its purpose was… if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about (the pink creature…??).

Anyway, I REALLY recommend this film to everyone, it's really a pleasure to watch! Lynch's third feature may have been a commercial disaster, but it gets under your skin and is marked by unforgettable images and an extraordinary soundtrack. Nowhere. It just does not exist. The closest we have to David Lynch's original vision is the theatrical release. Some people sometimes refer to the extended TV cutthe "director's cut" (and some even dare to offer copies of it in various auction sites under that label), but that couldn't be further removed from reality, that version was rejected by Lynch to the point of deleting his name from the credits. A legal DVD of Dune: The Director's Cut exists, but that's for the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, not this film.

However, the cast and crew of Lynch's Dune have confirmed that Lynch showed them an 'assembly cut' of the film shortly after principal photography wrapped. Although the film had yet to go through post-production, the reaction was very positive. This cut has not been seen since (as is the case with most assembly cuts).

There is also a fan version available, that attempts to get closer to both the novel and David Lynch's original vision: http://www.fanedit.org/ifdb/412-dune-the-alternative-edition-redux It's "Backyard" by Emmett Chapman, included on his album Parallel Galaxy. Chapman was also the creator of the instrument (knownthe Chapman Stick) that Gurney plays, repainted and with an added lower part to represent the Baliset described by Frank Herbert in the original novel. Herbert was very complimentary towards the film, impressed that Lynch had managed to include so much from his novel in such a short time. He did, however, take a small issue with the portrayal of Paulhaving become a literal god-figure at the end. Both versions contain footage that's missing in the other one, but the Theatrical Version lacks way more footage. Furthermore several scenes have been removed and reinserted afterwards in the TV Version, some of them are edited differently. But these differences aren't mentioned in this comparison because it would break the mold. David Lychn's version is the Theatrical Version btw. He wasn't involved in the TV Version and ordered that his name in the opening credits was going to be replaced by Alan Smithee . The main difference in the two versions is the fact that the TV Version has been split up to smaller episodes. As a result of that, the movie doesn't look like a motion picture anymore but like a big TV production.
